Onimusha: Way of the Sword Reveals New Characters

Onimusha: Way of the Sword has unleashed a new trailer for Tokyo Game Show 2025, this time honing its focus in on the story of Miyamoto Musashi and the cast of characters he’ll meet in the upcoming game. The legendary swordsman and protagonist of Onimusha: Way of the Sword will still have plenty of ways to dispatch foes with his blade, but mastering the power of his gauntlet looks like it will take the combined efforts of several allies.

The Onimusha franchise saw its heyday in the early 2000s, with four mainline games and a few spin-offs released between 2001 and 2006. In the years since, the series had seemed largely forgotten by publisher and developer Capcom, but a remastered release of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny in May has reinvigorated the fan base and drawn in some new players, following the 2024 announcement of the Onimusha series’ major comeback with the next entry planned for release in 2026.

New Onimusha: Way of the Sword Trailer Shows off an Epic Story

The new trailer revealed during the Capcom Online Program for Tokyo Game Show 2025 still shows off some of Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s intense combat, but it puts a heavier focus on Musashi’s dedication to his sword and coming to terms with needing the power of the sentient gauntlet to fend off demons and other supernatural enemies. He’ll be led down the path to accepting the gauntlet’s demonic power and using it to achieve his own goals by multiple allies who will take him on a soul-searching journey to discover the true meaning of personal strength.

In a previous statement made in February, producer Akihito Kadowaki had noted that the cast of compelling characters is one of the core aspects of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Mushashi was a real-world samurai serving Ieyasu Tokugawa who became a ronin after his daimyo’s defeat at the decisive Battle of Sekigahara, and the trailer shows off some of the other real-world late 16th and early 17th century figures he’ll come across in his journey. These include kabuki innovator Izumo no Okuni and scholar Ono no Takamura, the latter of whom’s in-game counterpart is also a gauntlet bearer.

Another real-world-based character who appears to serve an adversarial role is fellow swordsman Sasaki Kojiro, who was also known as Ganryu, the name used for him in the game. A short narrative that followed the trailer during the presentation confirms Ganryu will be a boss fight in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and those lucky enough to be at Tokyo Game Show 2025 will have a chance to face his corrupted form in a fight to the death.
